I Need Your Help

I need your help.

As you may know, I’m in the middle of a career change. After working for 20 years in tech I’m taking a break and going back to teaching and playing music (with tech!). You may also know I love to make products and ship ‘em! Nothing like the thrill of pushing a new child out into the world.

I’m launching 3 sites today as a way to raise money to make free lessons (one-on-one and pre-recorded) available for beginning students. I’ll also help get them access to affordable instruments. I’ve already received a few donations for which I am incredibly grateful. Check those closets to see if you’ve got any gear that you’re not using!

I hope to update the content on the sites at least 3-5 days a week so there should be a ton of content pretty quickly!

Last year was such a mess, yet at every turn everyone was so incredibly kind and understanding, so I want to give back to the universe.

Please check out the sites below when you can and let me know what you think and “Like and subscribe, become a patron, take some lessons, and tell your friends!”

We'll be in touch

49663377778_2f381eddf0_k.jpg

Exactly a year ago today was the last time I went into the office to work. I had a feeling bad times were coming. At the end of the day I grabbed my camera and headed to Center Stage to take pictures of the Eric Johnson show for Atlanta Music Guide.

I remember keeping my distance from people, getting my shots during the first 3 songs and then scanning the venue for a spot to watch the rest of the show that would be out of the way.

"You can't stand on the stairs. Have a seat."

I was graciously given a comp ticket for the show. Typically these are in the back or on the side somewhere. That should be fine. I checked my seat location. 3rd row. Dead center. Incredibly nice of everyone involved. I made my way down the aisle, my big ole' backpack in my hands.

"Excuse me, pardon me, sorry..."

I inconvenienced about 10 people getting to my seat, not to mention everyone behind me. I sat there for 2 songs, surrounded by a very specific demographic of mask-less folks cheering and having a great time. I started to have a mini-panic attack.

"Excuse me again, pardon me, sorry again..."

I headed out across the street and down the escalator to grab a MARTA train to get home.

"NEXT TRAIN: 55 MIN" the sign apologized and maybe even shrugged a little.

I ordered an Uber. 5 minutes later a nice young lady picked me up and proceeded to get on the interstate the wrong way and then get lost despite the fact that the her GPS kept saying “Make a U-Turn” or “Turn left here” and eventually, “Recalculating.”

I rolled down my window and partially stuck my head out of it.

25 minutes into what should've been a 10 minute ride she dropped me off at the hulking MLK station and I jumped in my car.

When I got home I checked my work email. "Please work remotely tomorrow while we assess the ongoing COVID-19 situation. We'll be in touch."

Marilyn

Hey all, as some of you may know, Robyn Canady McNicholas and I relocated up to Cedar Rapids in August to be closer to her family as her Mom, Marilyn fought valiantly against the cancer that had taken root in her lungs.

Sadly, her fight ended on Monday morning. When she passed, she was resting peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.

Over the last few months and weeks, we've all been blessed to hear friends and family tell her story. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried and now we’re grieving.

The fact that she made it 3 years after her initial stage-4 diagnosis, speaks volumes to her tenacious, strong and proud spirit. I will always remember her quick wit, her kindness and the gift that she brought into the world that I would eventually fall in love with and marry.

“I have no regrets. I’ve lived a full and wonderful life.” ~ Marilyn Canady

We should all be so lucky.

I would like your opinion

Hey friends, I would like your opinion.

I started working on a record towards the end of last year with some amazing folks. In March, 8 songs were mixed. Fast-forward a few weeks and everything was sequenced and mastered.

Then everything really went to shit with the world.

Some people have been inspired by this new-found solitude and have been even more creative and prolific and I’ll admit I’m jealous. Mostly I’ve just shut down. I’ve played few online shows and porch parties but it’s felt like a chore, even though the actual performing is the greatest thing in the world and I loved every minute of it.

I’ve written a few tunes I really like, but for the most part I rarely pick up a guitar or get creative all week, save for the occasional 30-second jamout.

Which brings me back to my record. I have a record I was going to promote with a proper agency (for the first time in ages), make some videos, book some shows, jump in the car, see your smiling faces, etc… but now that’s on indefinite hold.

I’ve considered waiting until this is all over, but who knows when that will be. I’ve considered starting from scratch with a ton of new tunes. I’ve considered moving to Ireland to buy a farm. I’ve considered lots of things.

Since people don’t seem to consume records like they used to I’m leaning towards releasing 1 song a month with a video and then the whole album at the very end with the last 2 songs.

I can’t sit on these children forever and I really want people to hear each tune. I’ll probably schedule an on-line show with each song release and maybe even some fun extras.

Any suggestions about the record or how to find that spark again?

Hope you're well,

John

I need a word

The older I get the more I think there needs to be a word for "not knowing this is the last time I'll have this experience and I don't know it." I keep hearing about places closing for good or going out of businesses and I wish I could go 1 more time.

Time Flies

Just came across a fuzzy old picture of me and the first version of the NBA App that launched on 4/6/2009. 11 years ago yesterday. Took us a total of 96 days from conception to launch. Time flies
